Pet Health Insurance: Blessing or Curse? (1-1.5 hours)
Increases in the quality of pet health care have led to increased costs of care for the pet owner. Pet health insurance has emerged as an alternative means of providing that health care for the pet. This presentation looks at the framework of pet health insurance and evaluates the cost and coverage of standard accident/illness plans for four pet health insurance companies as well as the quality of customer service and possible ethical issues that may arise.
Pet Trusts, Sanctuaries and Retirement Home Options for your Clients’ Pets (1 hour)
Who needs to consider the possibility of being outlived by their pets? The elderly are the first population to pop to mind, but they are by no means the only pet owners who should plan ahead – all of our clients face the possibility of sudden death or incapacitation and few have made provisions for their pets. This presentation will address the many options that exist. It is designed to outline the basic features of the most popular options and present pros and cons of each in order to inform the veterinarian who may field questions from clients.
Top Legal Issues Commonly Faced by Equine Veterinarians (2 hours)
Equine practitioners frequently are faced with challenging legal questions as they conduct their daily business activities. These legal dilemmas range from the relatively straightforward of “whether veterinarians have a duty of confidentiality” to the more complex of drug compounding and “what are the minimum standards for performing pre-purchase examinations.” Even more challenging is that even though some situations may appear similar on the surface, the unique facts of each scenario may require the application of a different law or application of the same law that leads to a different result. This seminar will give attendees a sampling of some of the legal issues faced on a daily basis by equine veterinarians.
Hot Legal Issues Faced by Shelter Veterinarians and Other Animal Caregivers (2 hours)
Managing or working at a veterinary hospital, non-profit organization, dog training facility or breeding operation does not come without its legal dilemmas. Often the daily challenges are not with the animals or clients, but with the law. When you “adopt out” animals to the public; educate owners about the responsibilities of pet ownership; investigate suspected rabies cases and animal bites; handle abandoned animals; provide behavior consultations to pet owners; investigate animal cruelty cases, and institute animal population control programs, you are bound to step over some legal land mines. The goal of this presentation is to provide attendees with the ability to recognize and address some of their most frequently encountered legal problems.
Getting Clients to Pay for Services without Inappropriately Discounting Veterinary Services (1 hour)
Most veterinarians have heard complaints from their clients that their fees are just too high and they cannot afford such high rates of service. This has been corroborated by the Bayer Veterinary Care Usage Study by Brakke Consulting. Reducing fees for veterinary services may seem like the kind and caring thing to do to help out a struggling client; however this is not the best solution for a practice or the welfare of its staff. Discounting veterinary services not only makes the practice less profitable but also devalues your services in the eyes of your clients. How can you keep your practice profitable, but still address the client’s financial burdens? This lecture will go through different practices to teach clients value and providing relief without having to discount veterinary services.
